Michael Joseph Jackson was born in August 29, 1958 in Gary Indiana, United States. His father, Joseph Jackson, a former guitarist, established a group called Jackson 5 of Michael’s elder brothers. Michael would join this group in 1964 being only 5 years old as the lead singer and central figure. Michael was quickly recognized as a true talent due to his remarkable voice and dancing skills.
Later he would embark on a solo career, however under the Jackson 5 brand, with a solo album “Off the Wall” in 1979. Off the Wall was a collaboration between Michael Jackson and producer Quincy Jones under Epic record company. The album sold over 20 million and featured pop/funk songs with great lyrics, such as “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” (Grammy award), “Rock with you”, “Off the wall” and “Girlfriend” (written by Paul McCartney).
The following solo album “Thriller” was released in 1982, which later has become the most selling album in the world including seven top10 hits. Michael Jackson’s music video “Thriller” had a huge impact on the emergence of music videos in the popular culture. In addition, Michael Jackson’s performance of the song “Billie Jean” at the honorary concert for Motown shock the audience with a spectacular dance move called the “Moonwalk”. The album featured collaboration with artists: Paul McCartney (The Girl is Mine) and Eddie van Halen (Beat it).
Before his next album in 1985, Michael Jackson co-wrote and sang in the charity single for Africa, “We are the world” with a notable group of stars. His next album “Bad” in 1987 again featured five number one songs: “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, “Bad”, “The Way You Make Me Feel”, “Man in the Mirror” and “Dirty Diana”. Nevertheless “Bad” did not reach the huge success of “Thriller”, Michael Jackson launched a world tour, grossing over $125 million.
His next album “Dangerous” in 1991 featured only one number one song “Black or White”, which was a statement against racism with its lyrics and music video. “Dangerous” was recognized as one of the top selling albums of the 1990s. Michael Jackson’s following album “HIStory” (full name: HIStory Past, Present and Future, Book I) became one of the most controversial albums, due to, for instance contents of lyrics. The album received good reviews and became a success including top10 songs: “Scream”, “Childhood”, “You Are Not Alone”, “Earth Song”, “This Time Around”. “HIStory” consisted of both old hits from previous albums and new songs. With his sister Janet, Michael Jackson produced a remarkable music video for the song “Scream“.
Michael Jackson’s last studio album “Invincible” was released in 2001. It received sound reviews, but did not reach the success of his previous albums (sold around 13 million copies) with lesser marketing and promotional activities. It featured singles such as: “You Rock My World”, “Cry”, “Butterflies” ja “Speechless”. Although the battle between Sony and Michael Jackson was fierce and affected the success of “Invincible”, it was voted as the best album of 2010.
The great artist, The King of Pop, passed away on June 25, 2009 due to cardiac arrest in the age of 50.
